Woman who died during incident in Midleton identified following arrest of suspect
Daena Walsh, a mother of two, was found deceased in an apartment in Midleton, Co Cork.
The woman who died after an incident in an apartment in Midleton on Friday afternoon has been named locally as Daena Walsh, a 27-year-old mother-of-two.
A 29-year-old man was arrested yesterday evening in connection with the incident and was being questioned in connection.
Gardaí have confirmed that his detention period has been extended for another six hours.
Ms Walsh was found with fatal stab wounds in a burning building just off the Main Street in the bustling East Cork town.
The alarm was raised around 4:10pm when it was reported that a woman had sustained injuries following an incident at a property on Connolly Street in Midleton.
Paramedics arrived on the scene to find that Ms Walsh had died from her injuries.
The crew then became aware that another part of the building was on fire, and they retreated and raised the alarm.
Fire crews attended the incident, bringing the blaze under control just after.

Gardaí also attended the scene and sealed off the area to conduct a forensic investigation.
They were also conducting door-to-door inquiries to determine if anyone in neighbouring properties had seen or heard anything that could help piece together what unfolded.
CCTV footage from nearby properties and businesses will also be examined.
The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post mortem examination is expected to be conducted by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster on Saturday.
A spokesman for An Garda Síochána said gardaí and emergency services were at the scene on Friday afternoon.
“Inquiries are ongoing, and no additional information is available at this time,” he said.
