Man arrested as woman, 27, found dead after incident in Midleton apartment

A woman is dead after an incident in an apartment in East Cork this afternoon.

Gardaí say a man in his 30s has been arrested in relation to the incident.

He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. 

Gardaí and fire fighters attended the scene of the incident, which took place at John Barry House on Connolly Street in Midleton.

The alarm was raised just after 4.10pm today with reports that a woman had sustained injuries following an incident at a property.

Paramedics arrived at the address quickly but found the woman, aged 27, with fatal injuries. Though she was administered emergency medical treatment, she was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. 

The crews then became aware that another part of the building was on fire, and they retreated and raised the alarm.

Gardaí also attended the scene, and traffic diversions are in place.

The scene has been preserved pending and examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.

The local Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified. 

A garda spokesperson said that and incident room has been set up at Midleton Garda Station, and a senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation. 

A family liaison officer has also been assigned to support the family, the spokesperson added. 

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses and have urged any members of the public with camera footage from Connolly Street/Main Street areas of Midleton on Friday afternoon to come forward.

A spokeswoman for Cork County Fire Service said they were called to the fire at 16:28 on Friday.

Three appliances from Midleton and Cobh Fire Brigades attended and the fire was brought under control at around 17:04, she said.

They were still at the scene shortly before 6pm to monitor for any further risks.
