Funeral of boy who died in Clare hotel  pool to take place on Wednesday

Seven-year-old Shay Lynch, a pupil of Scoil Seanáin Naofa, Clonlara, died in an accident in a Clare hotel on Saturday.

The boy who seven-year-old boy who died in an accident in a swimming pool in a Clare hotel will be laid to rest on Wednesday.

Shay Lynch from Shannonview, Ardnataggle, O’Briendsbridge died in the incident at the Lakeside Hotel in Killaloe on Saturday afternoon while attending a birthday party.

Shay was transported from the scene to University Hospital Limerick, where he was later pronounced dead.

In a funeral post online, his family said he died in a tragic accident.

It said that he is survived by his heartbroken family, parents James and Tania, sister Abi, grandparents Jerome, Joe and Kathleen, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, neighbours and his many friends.

He will lie in repose in McMahon’s funeral home in Blackwater, Co Clare on Tuesday evening from 5pm to 7pm.

His cortege will arrive at St Senan;s Church in Clonlara on Wednesday morning for 11am Mass, followed by burial in St Thomas’s churchgrounds in Bridgetown.

Tributes have been paid to the youngster following his death.

Scoil Seanain Naofa in Clonlara said that the first class pupil had a “bright smile” and a “warm heart”.

“He will be greatly missed,” it said.

"Shay was a talented, loved and valued member of our U9s team."

The school has implemented a Critical Incident Management Plan and is liaising with the National Educational Psychological Service to put support structures in place for the school community.

Clonlara GAA Club said “Shay was a talented, loved and valued member of our U9s team”.

All club activities have been suspended over the coming days as a mark of respect to his family.

The leisure centre at the Lakeside Hotel remains closed at present, while local GAA clubs in the Clonlara area have suspended activities as a mark of respect to the young GAA player.

Taoiseach Simon Harris said the news was “absolutely heartbreaking”.

He said: “I know people right across Ireland are keeping this family and the community of Clonlara in Co Clare in their thoughts and prayers at such a sad and difficult time.”
