Two men who were hospitalised after being splashed with a chemical substance at a Cork pharmaceutical plant have been discharged from hospital.

The men were among three who were injured in the incident at the Janssen Sciences Ireland plant in Ringaskiddy on Friday evening, shortly after 5pm.

Sources said on Saturday that the men were released from hospital after a number of hours and that the hospitalisation was “precautionary”.

It is believed the injuries incurred in the incident included skin blistering.

Two investigations are currently taking place as a result of the incident. One is an internal one by Janssen, while the Health and Safety Authority is also investigating.

Emergency services including the National Ambulance Service, gardaí, and fire brigade units attended the scene and remained there until 8pm.

“Three individuals were treated at the scene by Janssen First Responders,” a company spokeswoman said.

“As per procedures, the emergency services were contacted. Two of the individuals were subsequently taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) by ambulance.” “The safety of those working on our site is paramount," the Janssen spokeswoman said.

Janssen has operated in Cork since 2005, manufacturing treatments for a range of illnesses including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn’s Disease, Psoriasis, and Multiple Myeloma.
