A Status Orange rain warning has been issued for Cork for Thursday evening until Friday evening, with "persistent and heavy rainfall" likely.

The warning comes into effect from 6pm on Thursday and will remain in place until 6pm on Friday.

During this time, Met Éireann is forecasting localised flooding as a result of heavy rain, along with poor visibility and "very difficult travelling conditions."

Cork is the only county affected by the orange warning, though a status yellow rain warning has also been issued for Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Wicklow, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford over the same time period.

National forecast

The forecaster says Thursday morning will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells, but cloudier, rainier conditions develop in the South of the county.

By the afternoon, persistent rain will develop in the south and spread northwards throughout the evening.

Spot flooding is possible in some areas of Munster and Leinster.

Highest temperatures on Thursday will range between 15C and 18C in light northeast breezes.

As for Friday, Met Éireann says there is some "uncertainty in the forecast" but very heavy overnight rain will be "slow to clear eastwards, possibly even lingering for much of the day, before eventually easing through the night."

Temperatures Friday will be cooler, ranging between 12C and 15C.
