A man accused of murdering chef Ian Baitson in Cobh has now also been charged with producing a long-bladed sword and a money laundering offence.
Dylan Scannell, 30, with an address at O’Rahilly Street, Cobh, had previously been charged with the murder of Mr Baitson, a 33-year-old father of two, who suffered serious injuries during an incident in a car park in Cobh on March 15 and later died.
Mr Scannell made no comment when he was arrested and charged with the two new offences under caution by Garda David O’Shea at Mallow District Court on Tuesday.
He has been charged that on March 15, at Eurospar carpark, Newtown Rd, Cobh, Co Cork, the accused produced a long-bladed sword, an article capable of inflicting serious injury, in the course of a dispute and in a manner likely to unlawfully intimidate another person. This was contrary to Section 11 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.
The sword was allegedly produced while committing an alleged offence, named on the charge sheet as murder.
A second charge states that on an unknown date between August 2023 and March 2024 at an unknown location within the District Court area of Midleton he engaged in transferring, handling, possessing and using property — namely cash — that is in the proceeds of criminal conduct while knowing whether or not that property was the proceeds of criminal conduct.
This alleged offence is contrary to Section 7(1) (a) (ii), 7 (1) (b) and 7(3) of the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing) Act 2010.
Inspector Tony O’Sullivan said that the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed trial on indictment on all three charges.
Mr Scannell was remanded in custody by Judge Marie Keane until August 13 when he is to appear again at Mallow District Court via videolink.
Inspector O’Sullivan said that the book of evidence was unlikely to be ready on that date.
Mr Scannell appeared in Mallow District Court wearing a black Canada Goose gilet, a dark green top, dark green shorts and black trainers.
