A car had allegedly been driven the wrong way down a motorway at Ballybeg in Mitchelstown when it collided with another car in the early hours of Saturday, July 1.

A 17-year-old charged in connection with a deadly crash on the M8 motorway in which a teenager was killed this summer is to plead guilty to five charges, his solicitor indicated in Mallow District Court.

The boy, who cannot be named as he is a juvenile, had been charged with 12 offences following the head-on collision near Mitchelstown, including a charge related to the death of Johnny Foley, 16, from Togher in Cork.

The juvenile appeared in Mallow District Court via videolink from Oberstown Juvenile Detention Centre on Tuesday.

He will go forward on a signed guilty plea to Cork Circuit Court on five of the existing charges, his solicitor Cathal Lombard said in Mallow District Court.

The teenager faces one charge of dangerous driving causing death; three charges of dangerous driving causing serious harm; and one charge of endangerment under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Judge Colm Roberts refused jurisdiction in the case. The juvenile is to attend Mallow District Court on Monday to face one further charge from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The deceased, Johnny Foley, from Spur Hill in Cork City had been a front-seat passenger in the car.

The teenage boy who was driving the car and three other passengers—two teenage males and a 14-year-old girl—were all taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) after the crash where they received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

A woman who was driving the car which the teenagers collided head-on with, was also hospitalized following the incident.
