Flights are largely returning to normal today at Irish airports following disruption to dozens of incoming and outgoing flights at Cork, Dublin and Shannon airports yesterday.

Over 1,000 flights were reported cancelled at UK airports including many coming to or leaving from Ireland as chaos followed an air traffic control glitch on Tuesday.

Cork Airport had advised on Tuesday evening that nine flights were cancelled, five inbound and four outbound.

Barry Holland, communications manager for Cork Airport, said that all departing flights on Wednesday morning have operated as normal, and "normal operations are expected at Cork Airport throughout the day". 

"Passengers intending to travel today are advised to refer to their airline’s website or mobile app for the latest and most up to date flight information," Mr Holland added. 

Around 90 flights to and from Dublin were cancelled due to the UK tech flitch on Tuesday. 

In a statement on Wednesday morning, Dublin Airport said a full schedule of flights would now be operating.

“This follows a challenging day yesterday, when air traffic control issues in the UK resulted in around 90 flights to and from Dublin being cancelled.

“Airlines worked throughout the night to reposition their aircraft, ensuring our busy first wave of flights was able to get underway as normal.

“Dublin Airport remained open overnight to accommodate and assist the many passengers who had been left stranded in Dublin as a result of yesterday’s disruption.

“The significant upheaval on Tuesday means the possibility of some disruption across the wider flight network in Europe remains today.

“Passengers, as always, should keep in contact with their airline directly to get the latest updates on the status of their flight,” the airport said.

Technical failure 

FlightRadar24 tracks air traffic in real time around the world.

On Tuesday evening it posted on X that the rate of inbound flights to London, Manchester and Birmingham was much lower than last Tuesday.

“More than 1,000 flights have been cancelled at UK airports following a technical failure at a NATS ATC facility earlier today,” it said.

The NATS air traffic control office apologised to passengers at 7.30pm on Tuesday, having first confirmed the problems around lunch-time.

It said staff were “working as hard as possible” to clear the backlog.
