Met Éireann issues nationwide status yellow weather warning for Sunday

Heavy rain, hail, and thunderstorms are forecast across the country on Sunday, with Met Éireann issuing a nationwide status yellow weather warning.

The warning came into effect at midday and remains in place until 9pm.

Met Eireann said that there will be heavy showers or longer spells of rain, “with thunderstorms bringing some lightning and hail”.

The forecaster warned of possible localised flooding, difficult travelling conditions, poor visibility and possible lightning damage. It also said that outdoor events could be impacted.

The warning comes as tens of thousands of revellers were enjoying Electric Picnic in Stradbally, Co Laois.

The latest weather warning followed a weather advisory issued on Saturday which is due to expire at midnight, warning of “heavy showers or longer spells of rain on Sunday, especially during the afternoon and early evening”.

It said: “Some localised torrential downpours will occur with the potential for thunderstorms, lightning and associated gusty winds. While they will be hit and miss, some localised flooding may occur.”
