More than 5,000 drivers were caught speeding over the course of a bank holiday roads policing operation.

The operation commenced on Thursday and concluded yesterday in a bid to ensure road safety during the bank holiday weekend.

During this period, there was two fatalities on our roads, and 16 serious injury collisions.

Additionally, 188 people were arrested for driving under the influence, while 353 people were caught for using a mobile phone and 104 people were found not wearing seatbelts. 

A total of 5,054 people were found speeding. 

Some of the notable speeds detected on Tuesday included a motorist travelling at 88 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on the N60, Castlerea in Roscommon and a driver doing 83 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N52, L2002, Abbeydorney in Kerry.

Meanwhile another driver was travelling at 105 km/h in a 80 km/h zone on the N4, Lucan, Co Dublin whilst a fourth was 28km/h over the speed limit on the N3, Carnaross in Meath.

"Road safety needs to remain a priority for everyone," a garda spokesperson said. 

"An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to all road users to slow down and stick to the speed limit. 

"Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. 

"Wear your seatbelt and don’t get distracted by mobile devices when you are driving," they added.
