Driver caught at 114km/h in 60km/h zone as gardaí detect 760 speeding offences

More than 760 drivers were detected speeding on the first day of An Garda Síochána's bank holiday road safety operation, with one motorist caught travelling at 114km/h in a 60km/h zone in Dublin.

The nationwide enforcement operation began on Thursday morning and will continue until Tuesday morning.

No fatal collisions had been recorded during the operation at the time of the latest update. The number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year stands at 108.

The highest speed detected on Thursday was 114km/h in a 60km/h zone in Dublin, 54km/h above the legal speed limit.

Other notable detections included:

• 90km/h in a 50km/h zone on the R474 at Mahonburgh, Kilmaley, Co Clare.
• 117km/h in an 80km/h zone on the N2 at Knockronaghan, Emyvale, Co Monaghan.
• 139km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N7 at Palmerstown, Johnstown, Co Kildare.

Drink-driving arrests

In addition to the speeding detections, 20 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Gardaí also detected more than 90 motorists either using a mobile phone while driving or failing to wear a seatbelt.

The bank holiday enforcement campaign is targeting the four "lifesaver" offences: speeding, drink- and drug-driving, mobile phone use while driving, and failing to wear a seatbelt.

The operation aims to improve road safety and help ensure all road users travel safely over the bank holiday weekend.

"Road safety needs to be a priority for everyone. Slow down and stick to the speed limit. Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. Wear your seatbelt and don’t get distracted by mobile devices when you are driving. You can help get another person home safe this weekend," a garda spokesperson said.
