Streaming giant Netflix has released a trailer for the documentary about the brutal killing of Irishman Jason Corbett by his American wife and father-in-law.
Mr Corbett, a 39-year-old father of two from Limerick, had been battered to death with a brick and baseball bat by his American wife Molly, now 40, and her former FBI agent father Tom, now 73, in August 2015.
Releasing on May 9, will be a “chilling exploration of love and betrayal featuring interviews with those closest to the case,” Netflix said.
It also said the documentary will feature “exclusive interviews” with Mr Corbett’s children as well as the two people convicted of killing him.
This conviction for murder was successfully overturned on appeal. Tom and Molly Martens were freed last summer in the US after serving four years and three months in jail, after striking a plea bargain where they admitted to the voluntary manslaughter of the Limerick businessman.
At the time, the family of Mr Corbett said they were "deeply disappointed" by their release. They also vowed to "tirelessly uphold his honourable legacy and seek justice to preserve his memory”. they added:
Earlier this year, Mr Corbett’s daughter Sarah Corbett Lynch shared her side of the story in a memoir. His sister Tracy Corbett Lynch has also written books on the subject.
Netflix said its new documentary “sheds a bright light on the many questions that have lingered since the shocking events of that night”.
It said that when Mr Corbett, a widower, “found love again” with Molly Martens in 2018, “their relationship seemed ripped from the pages of a storybook” before it took a “dark turn”.
“A Deadly American Marriage asks viewers to reflect on the elusive truths beneath a once seemingly fairy-tale life that ended in tragedy,” it added.
The documentary is produced and directed by Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell, and will be available on Netflix from next month.
