A teenage boy has died after getting into difficulty in water in Westmeath.

The incident occurred at Lough Ree off Carnakilla Point, Glasson at around 7.30pm on Saturday.

Gardaí said that following a search operation, a 15-year-old boy was recovered from the water.

He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Gardaí said the boy was removed to the mortuary at Mullingar Hospital, where an autopsy will be arranged.

A file will be prepared for the Coroner, gardaí said.
