The majority of Irish consumers say they have been targeted by scammers, according to a survey by a global money app.

A survey of 2,000 Irish adults, conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Wise, indicates that 81% of Irish customers were targeted by scammers last year.

It also indicated that 82% of people think scams are getting more sophisticated and 77% of Irish people believe scam attempts increased significantly last year.

If it looks too good to be true it probably is, so it’s important to look out for common red flags and to take effective preventative measures

Two in every five, or 39%, of 16-24 year olds received scam text messages, which is disproportionately more than any other age group, according to the survey.

Almost half (46%) of Irish people believe that scam awareness should become part of the school curriculum.

When it comes to sums of money taken, men reported significantly higher average losses, of €2,168.73, compared with women at €1,151.22.

Men are also less likely to admit to their family members that they have been scammed.

Wise’s scams and financial fraud expert James Clements said education and awareness was key to tackling scams.

“It’s important for people to remain vigilant of scam attempts, especially when looking for the best deals,” he said.

“Our research shows most consumers find January more financially stressful than other months.

“Consumers can’t be blamed for looking out for a bargain buy or a cheap holiday abroad as a pick-me-up. However, this can make them more vulnerable to fraudsters.

“If it looks too good to be true it probably is, so it’s important to look out for common red flags and to take effective preventative measures.”
