'A warrior': Tributes to former Irish soldier killed in action in Ukraine

Robert Deegan, who was killed while fighting in Ukraine

A former member of the Irish Defence forces has been killed in action in Ukraine.

Robert Deegan, aged 29, from Newbridge, Co Kildare, died on September 19.

The former member of the Army Ranger Wing with the Defence Forces was popular among his former colleagues and went to fight for Ukraine when the war broke out.

He returned home after suffering serious facial injuries in an IED strike but went back to Ukraine this year, and died last Thursday.

His family issued a statement on Monday and said he was a man of “determination, honour loyalty and bravery”.

“The family are extremely devastated by the loss of Robert. He made the ultimate sacrifice while staying true to his principles and character," it said.

“Robert should be remembered as a hero who died protecting his comrades in battle while fighting for a principled cause.

“He stayed behind to cover his comrades' retreat. He fought and died like a warrior. He will be forever remembered in our hearts.”

It added: “He was severely injured in Ukraine in 2022 and lost an eye due to an IED strike.

“Once he recovered, he went back out to the Ukraine war against the family’s wishes.

“Robert embodies the definition of determination, honour, loyalty and bravery."

Some of his family is involved with the Irish Defence Forces.

A source said it is not yet known if Mr Deegan’s remains have been recovered.

A spokesperson from the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of reports and is providing consular assistance. As with all consular cases, the department does not comment on the detail of individual cases,” the spokesperson said.
