Early Bank Holiday washout with status orange and yellow weather warnings in place

Met Éireann says the western half of the country will see widespread rain on Monday morning, which could become "very heavy or thundery in parts" leading to some localised flooding. File picture

Met Éireann is warning of flooding, poor visibility and difficult travelling conditions amid a pair of weather warnings currently in place for seven counties.

A status orange rain warning for Donegal, Mayo, and Galway has been in place since midnight.

The forecaster is warning of "heavy and persistent rain and strong southerly winds, especially in exposed areas" between now and the time the warning lapses at 10am.

A status yellow warning, affecting all of Connacht as well as Clare and Donegal has been in place since midday on Sunday.

That warning will lift at 12pm on Monday. Met Éireann says people can expect heavy rain coupled with "strong and gusty southerly winds" particularly in more exposed areas. It says there is a risk of poor visibility, difficult travelling conditions, damage to temporary structures and localised flooding.

National forecast

Nationally, Met Éireann says the western half of the country will see widespread rain on Monday morning, which could become "very heavy or thundery in parts" leading to some localised flooding.

By late morning and early afternoon, the rain will move eastwards giving way to some sunnier spells. Winds today will be moderate to fresh and gusty southerly winds, veering westerly as the rain clears. Highest temperatures on Monday will range from 17C to 21C.

Temperatures will drop back to around 8C to 12C tonight amid a largely dry and clear night, though there will be some scattered showers in the west.

Met Éireann says Tuesday will be "a day of sunny spells and scattered showers" with these showers becoming more isolated by the evening. Temperatures tomorrow will range between 15C and 19C in moderate, occasionally fresh southwesterly winds.

Tuesday night too will see scattered showers, mainly in parts of the west and north with some longer spells of rain at times. Conditions will be largely dry elsewhere, with temperatures not falling below 10C to 12C.

Wednesday will bring a mix of cloud, sunny spells and scattered showers in the morning before the showers become more isolated through the afternoon.

By Wednesday evening however, Met Éireann says cloud will build from the southwest brining with it some patchy rain and drizzle. Highest temperatures on Wednesday will range from 16C to 20C.

Thursday too will be mostly cloudy and wet with outbreaks of rain becoming spreading throughout the morning.

The rain will again begin to clear from the west by the afternoon with some sunny spells and lingering showers. Highest temperatures Thursday will range from around 17C to 21C degrees.
