Government urged to bring in ‘absolutely necessary’ laws requiring shops to accept cash

'Older people who want to use cash will be with us for 20, 30 years to come,' the finance committee was told.

The Government has been urged to bring in laws to force shops to keep accepting cash and ensure no consumer should be forced to pay more because they are using notes and coins.

The call was made by Nat O'Connor, policy specialist at Age Action Ireland, who told the Oireachtas finance committee: “Older people who want to use cash will be with us for 20, 30 years to come.
