Man arrested in connection to Mullingar assault

Victim, in his 50s, is currently in Beaumont Hospital, where his condition is understood to be critical

A man, aged in his mid 50s was removed from the scene by emergency services personnel to Regional Hospital Mullingar.

A man in his 50s has been arrested in connection with a serious assault on Patrick Street, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The arrest took place this afternoon, 8th January, and he is currently detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda Station in the midlands.

Gardaí were alerted to a disturbance outside a premises in the town involving two men at about 1.40am and a man, aged in his mid 50s was removed from the scene by emergency services personnel to the Regional Hospital Mullingar.

He is currently in Beaumont Hospital, where his condition is understood to be critical.

The scene was preserved for forensic examination and investigations are ongoing.

Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Anyone who was in the vicinity of Patrick Street, Mullingar, between the hours of 1am to 2am on the morning of Sunday, January 7, who may have video footage of this incident are asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.
