Update 4.40pm: A narrative verdict has been recorded in the death of broadcaster Johnny Lyons almost two years ago.

Dublin Coroner’s Court heard Mr Lyons died of heart failure secondary to a blood clot after his knee was immobilised in a brace following a hairline fracture.

Johnny’s brother Maurice made the following statement after the inquest: "The family are devastated to learn of the medical circumstances around the death of Johnny Lyons.

"We are thoroughly satisfied with the narrative verdict delivered by the coroner. The family will not be making any further comment in this moment in time," he said.

Earlier: Dublin Coroner’s court has heard that the Mater Hospital is preparing a leaflet to advise patients of the risk of blood clots.

The court is hearing the inquest into the death of broadcaster Johnny Lyons who died in August 2015.

The 49 year old had suffered a hairline fracture a month beforehand and had been wearing a brace to immobilise his knee.

The autopsy report showed a causal link between the immobilisation of the knee and thrombosis which was suffered by Mr Lyons.

The inquest continues with a verdict expected this afternoon.
