A 39-year-old man is appearing in court this morning charged in connection with an armed robbery at a shop in Dublin yesterday, which was foiled by an off-duty garda.

The incident happened around 1.30pm in Stoneybatter. The raider pulled a gun on the newly-qualified officer, who successfully disarmed and restrained him.

The garda, who just recently graduated from Templemore College, walked into a shop on the Oxmantown Road in Stoneybatter at lunchtime yesterday and interrupted the armed robbery.

He identified himself as a garda, and the raider pulled a gun on him. The officer confronted the man and managed to get the weapon from him.

The garda then held the would-be thief there until help arrived.

A gun was seized at the scene, along with a large kitchen knife.

A 39-year-old man was arrested and taken to Mountjoy garda station. He is appearing in court this morning.
