Survey finds gap in how LGBT workers are treated in private and public sectors

A gap is emerging between public sector and private sector employers when it comes to how they treat Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender workers.

A survey by GLEN has found the public sector scored 21% on its benchmark system - compared to 51% for private sector employers.

It has said public sector workers who are members of the LGBT community need to be included more in things like pension schemes and equality programmes.

Spokesperson for GLEN Davin Roche has outlined the issues that need to be looked at.

“It’s about insuring that sexual orientation and gender identity are named and covered in equality or dignity at work policies,” said Roche.

“That parental leave and paternity leave are inclusive of same-sex couples.

“A growing area for employers is to insure that they are making provision for employees who might be transgender or who might be transitioning in the workplace”.
