Rail strike looms after talks break down
Commuters are being warned that a train strike now seems almost certain after talks between unions and management at Iarnród Eireann collapsed at 2am last night.
Train drivers are threatening to walk off the job between 6am and 9am next Friday in a dispute over pay.
SIPTU and the National Bus and Rail Union will hold a further three-hour stoppage on Friday November 6, if the dispute still has not been resolved.
This dispute centres around pay and productivity.
The drivers say management are not honouring a deal under which they are owed extra pay for additional duties.
Irish Rail says it is losing €1.5m a month - and cannot afford any extra payments unless drivers increase productivity further.
