Dublin vigil to honour Carrickmines fire victims

A vigil will be held in Dublin city centre this afternoon in honour of the victims of the Carrickmines fire and their families.

It takes place one week on from the blaze that claimed the lives of ten people in at a halting site on the Glenamuck road.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council said that progress is being made on reaching an agreement for a temporary halting site to house the 15 survivors.

Funerals for the victims are expected to take place next week and the gathering aims to show solidarity with those who have been devastated by the tragedy.

Organiser of this afternoon's gathering, well-known artist Paula Lambert, said: "Well, I just felt that it was such as a shocking tragedy and five children gone, 10 human beings, and I just felt that I'd like to organise something where could just have a think a week on, and maybe a minutes' silence.

"It's just a reflection on how precious life is, really."
