Man rescued from River Shannon after 999 call

A man has been rescued from the River Shannon in Limerick City this morning.

The man, believed to be in his late 20s, was heard entering the river near Harvey's Quay.

At approximately 4.30am, Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service received a 999 emergency call.

The caller said they heard "a splash" and a male "calling out for help".

Three units of the fire service attended, including their rescue boat Fireswift with specially trained river rescue fire men in board.

After searching the Harvey's Quay area, the firemen heard a man calling for help from O'Callaghan's Strand.

They discovered a man on the river bank, and he was treated for possible hyperthermia.

The man was also treated at the scene by HSE paramedics before he was taken by ambulance to University of Limerick.

"His injuries are not believed to be life threatening," said a source.

Gardaí from Henry Street also attended the scene.
