Man rescued from River Shannon

A man is recovering in hospital after being rescued from the River Shannon in Limerick city this morning.

The 20-year-old was spotted entering the river from Sarsfield Bridge by a bystander shortly before 1.30am.

Emergency services were alerted and rescue swimmers from Limerick's Fire Service Swift water rescue team managed to pull the man from the water and take him to St Michael's rowing club slipway.

The man had suffered injuries consistent with a fall from a height.

He was treated on the scene by HSE paramedics and removed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick, where he remains in a comfortable condition this afternoon.
