Shamrock Rovers scholarship recipient gets 2 year suspended sentence for possession of stolen watch

A former Shamrock Rovers scholarship recipient has been given a two year suspended sentence for being in possession of a stolen Cartier watch.

22-year-old Gary McMenamin of Kilmartin Abbey in Tallaght was travelling to the UK to sell the watch when he was stopped by gardaí.

He initially told gardaí the watch belonged to his girlfriend but then said it was offered to him by an acquaintance for €1,500.

The watch was stolen in an aggravated burglary in Wicklow in 2014 and is worth €10,000.

However Mr McMenamin is not believed to have been involved in stealing the watch, though the judge said he must have suspected that the watch was stolen before he bought it.

He sentenced McMenamin to two years in prison but suspended it for two years.
