Three-year-old boy dies after accident in Cork swimming pool

A toddler involved in an accident at a hotel swimming pool in Cork yesterday has died, Gardaí have confirmed.

Three-year-old Ronan Kennedy from Co. Tipperary was on holiday with his parents and two brothers when he got into difficulty at the Quality Hotel in Redbarn at approximately 2pm yesterday afternoon.

It is understood a lifeguard carried out CPR before he was transferred to Cork University Hospital.

The three-year-old boy – who would have turned four next month – was transferred from Cork University Hospital to Templestreet Children's University Hospital in Dublin yesterday evening, when he was in critical condition.

The three-star, 25-bedroom hotel is located at Redbarn Beach overlooking Youghal Bay approximately 5km east of the town. The facility includes a 20-metre heated swimming pool and a children's play pool.

In a statement this afternoon management at the Quality Hotel said they are shocked and upset and that their thoughts are with the little boy's family.

A full investigation is underway and a counsellor has been made available for guests and staff.
