Forensic tests on remains found in 'Disappeared' search

Forensic tests are being carried out on the remains of two people found in Co Meath during a new search for the so-called Disappeared.

The remains of two people were uncovered yesterday at a site in Coghalstown as part of searches for former monk Joe Lynskey, who was killed by the IRA in 1972.

The Independent Commission for the location of Victims Remains says DNA testing could take up to a month.

Senior investigator Jon Hill says the fact that more than one person has been found makes the search more complex.

"We'd be very cautious about disclosing who we thought it might be," he said. "It could be two to four weeks…DNA is the way we'll be heading from here."

While the search in Meath is for Joe Lynskey, it is believed Seamus Wright and Kevin McKee were also buried in the vicinity.

Last October the remains of another of the Disappeared, Brendan Megraw, were found in Orristown bog three decades after he went missing.

His brother Sean has offered his support to the three men's families. He said: "My thoughts are with them. I know it's very difficult at the moment but I'd say all three of them are relieved that somebody has been found - it's still progress."
