Pair refused leave to challenge referendum result

The President of the High Court has refused to grant leave to two men trying to challenge the outcome of the Marriage Equality Referendum.

Clare electrician Gerry Walshe and Maurice Lyons, a gardener from Co Kilkenny, brought separate cases against the State and Referendum Commission.

Mr Walshe argued the Government parties were not impartial and he raised concerns about the secrecy of the ballot because of CCTV at polling stations.

Mr Lyons argued that the majority of the eligible electorate did not vote in favour of the referendum.

President Nicholas Kearns found they had failed to raise any significant point.
