More than 100 taxi drivers protest in Dublin

Over 100 taxi drivers have taken part in a protest in the capital over changes to their fares.

The National Transport Authority will increase fares by an average of 4% and also change the number of bands with effect from April.

But many taxi drivers say the cost of re-calibrating and re-sealing their metres - up to 250 euro - is not worth the increase in fares.

They warn that some journeys will be losing money.

Today's protesters met at the Papal Cross in the Phoenix Park earlier in the afternoon. They they drove in a convoy of taxis to Kildare Street to deliver a letter to the Minister for Transport.

Today's action was taken by the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation and the National Private Hire and Taxi Association, but some other taxi groups have voted to accept the new fare structure.
