CAB will follow the money if Irish people are funding terrorism, says Fitzgerald

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has said that if there is any evidence of Irish people funding terrorism, then the Criminal Assets Bureau will "follow the money".

Frances Fitzgerald's told the Dáil that she is aware of 25-30 Irish citizens going to conflict zones since the commencement of the 'Arab Spring'.

She says while some were for humanitarian and family reasons, others have participated in fighting and at least three have died in the conflict.

Minister Fitzgerald said that reports that someone living in South Dublin is funding terrorism abroad are being treated seriously.

"We should follow the money," she said.

"And as CAB has very effectively done, clearly the legislation that we have in place in relation to money-laundering … we do have the legislation that would allow us to do that.

"And if there is evidence of that, clearly that legislation will be used."
