Supreme Court to decide who is mother of surrogate twins today
The Supreme Court will rule today on who is legally the mother of twins born to a surrogate.
Legal proceedings were initiated when the Registrar of Births refused to register the genetic mother on the children's birth certs. The genetic father was registered.
In May last year, a High Court judge ruled the genetic parents are entitled to be registered as the parents on the twins' birth certs.
That decision was appealed by the State, which argued the woman who gives birth is legally the mother, and that it is open to the genetic mother to adopt.
The twins in question were born to a surrogate because the genetic mother was unable to carry the pregnancy.
