Gardaí urge motorists to drive safely on 'Fatal Friday'

The gardaí are urging motorists to stay safe and observe the rules of the road.

The message comes today on the back of figures which show that a quarter of all fatal road accidents to date this year happened on a Friday.

Provisional Garda figures also show that eight of the 91 people who lost their lives on the roads were not wearing a seat belt.

Drivers are also being asked to slow down today on what has been deemed 'Fatal Friday'.

Chief superintendent Aidan Reid of the Garda Traffic Corps said that speeding achieves nothing more than adding to the fatalities on the roads.
