RSA warns drivers of black ice on roads

Motorists are being reminded to take extra care on the roads this morning after sub-zero temperatures overnight.

The Road Safety Authority is warning drivers of black ice in some parts of the country, while in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow there are reports of fallen trees.

Temperatures dipped as low as -5C in parts of Leinster and Munster overnight.

Pedestrians are also being advised to make themselves obvious by wearing a high visibility vest, walking on footpaths and crossing only at pedestrian crossings.

Where there are no footpaths, pedestrians should also walk facing oncoming traffic.

Gardaí in Dublin are asking drivers to be particularly careful with reports of fallen trees in many areas this morning.

Strong and gusty northeast winds remain across the city over the coming hours, along with snow and ice showers overnight are making driving conditions hazardous.

RSA Chief Executive, Noel Brett, said drivers should reduce their speed and that stopping distances are up to ten times longer in these conditions.
