Judge condemns bringing knives to debs

A judge has spoken out strongly against people bringing knives with them to debs dances as he jailed a 21-year-old man for three years for a violent attack on a young man in Cork city.

Judge Patrick Moran said it was shocking to think somebody would bring a knife with them to a debs - as he sentenced Thomas Noonan of Brooklodge, Glanmire to four years in jail with one year suspended.

Noonan was convicted of assault causing harm to then 18-year-old Jonathan Gough at Patrick's Quay in Cork early on the morning of September 26, 2009.

Another man, 20-year-old Sean Greenwood from Riverside, Sarsfield Court, Glanmire, was also convicted of assault causing harm to Mr Gough on the same occasion following an eight-day trial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

He was sentenced to three years with the final 18 months suspended.

A third man, Jonathan Delaney from Meadowbrook, Glanmire who had pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Mr Gough, was given a three-year suspended sentence.
