€715m Anglo bond repaid amid Dáil walk-out

Sinn Féin and United Left Alliance TDs have walked out of the Dáil in protest at the payment of unguaranteed bondholders at the former Anglo Irish Bank.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny refused a request from Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams to stop the payment and to name the bondholders.

Party leader Gerry Adams told the house: "This is an example of arrogance, of the Government just refusing to allow a proper, decent debate on this issue.

"The Sinn Féin party are not going to stay here to listen for the rest of this order of business. We are going to leave, Taoiseach."

Mr Kenny said he would love to say it was not necesary to repay the debts, but the Government was unable to convince the ECB, who he said were "trenchant".

"I do not know the names of the bondholders," he added. "I have no intention of getting on the phone to (Anglo chairman) Mr Dukes."

€715m has now been repaid to the unguaranteed bondholders.
