President to attend funeral of Garda

The outgoing President Mary McAleese will this evening attend the removal of Garda Ciarán Jones

who died on Monday while trying to help commuters who were struck in the severe flooding.

The 25-year-old, who was off duty at the time, was swept away by floodwaters at Ballysmuttan bridge in County Wicklow.

His removal will take place this evening to St Brigid's Church, in Manor Kilbride, in Blessington, at around 5.20pm.

His funeral mass will take place tomorrow.
