CAO: Points rise for science and tech courses

The points for college courses in science, technology and agriculture have increased dramatically this year.

However in contrary to previous years the points needed for courses in arts and business have decreased.

The news comes as the first round of CAO college offers are being posted online this morning for Leaving Cert students.

Offer notices will also arrive in the post for students later today.

Tomorrow is the deadline for Leaving Certificate students who want to view some exam papers - they must complete the application form and return it to their school by tomorrow.

A special helpline for students will be available today and tomorrow from 8am to 7pm by the National Parents' Council - the number is 1800 265 165.

Presidents of the Teachers' Union of Ireland Bernie Ruane said anyone who does not receive an offer through the CAO today should not be disheartened.

"For those who do receive an offer - you should accept the offer that you receive because this may be the only offer you get," she said.

"However for those that don't receive an offer there will be a second round of offers on September 1 so you may receive an offer then.

"Also, offers will issue until October 1."
