20 appear in court in connection with anti-Queen protests

Twenty people appeared in court last night charged with alleged public order offences arising from yesterday's protests against the Queen's State visit.

At a late night sitting of Cloverhill District Court in Dublin, all 20 were remanded in custody with consent to bail, and eight have so far taken bail.

One other person who was arrested yesterday was released without charge following a caution at Pearse Street garda station.

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has criticised those who protested yesterday.

"I think it’s unfortunate that the many, many thousands of people in Dublin, who I believe would have liked to have felt more part of the parcel of what was happening yesterday, it’s very unfortunate that people didn’t have the opportunity to do that," said Minister Shatter.

"This is a consequence of having a very small minority of individuals in this country who don’t accept the democratic will of the Irish people."
