Irish soldiers' deaths in Lebanon to be reviewed by August

An independent review into the deaths of three soldiers in the Lebanon 22 years ago will be complete within four months.

Corporal Fintan Heneghan, Private Mannix Armstrong and Private Thomas Walsh were killed by a landmine while on UN duty at Brasheet, in Lebanon in 1989.

The Minister for Justice Alan Shatter today announced that barrister Frank Callanan will examine the circumstances of their deaths.

New information uncovered during the State's preparation to defend a legal case sparked the inquiry.

Mr Callanan is due to report back with his findings to the Minister in August.
