A man accused of murdering a 24-year-old father of two in Mayo just over a year ago is due to go on trial at the Central Criminal Court on Wednesday.

A man accused of murdering a 24-year-old father of two in Mayo just over a year ago is due to go on trial at the Central Criminal Court on Wednesday.

Fintan McKenna (aged 24), of Woodlands, Balla, Castlebar has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Francis Heneghan in Kiltimagh on August 12 last year.

Mr Heneghan, a construction worker from Ballyheane outside Castlebar, died after being stabbed during an altercation near a pub on Main Street Rear in Kiltimagh.

Mr McKenna, who is originally from Artane in Dublin, moved with his family to the village of Balla a number of years ago.

A jury of nine men and three women has been sworn in for the trial which is due to go ahead on Wednesday morning before Mr Justice George Birmingham.

The case is expected to take just over a week.
