PSNI question man in connection with Derry car bomb

A man was being questioned today over a car bomb attack on a police station in the North earlier this week.

Widespread damage was caused on Tuesday after a 200lb device exploded outside the Strand Road station in Derry.

Members of the public narrowly escaped injury in the widely condemned attack, carried out by dissident republicans opposed to the peace process.

A 42-year-old man was arrested in the Derry area in connection with the incident, a Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said.

“He is currently assisting police with their enquiries at Antrim serious crime suite,” she added.

A taxi driver had been hijacked in the city shortly before 3am on Tuesday and forced to drive his car to the station after a device containing home-made explosives was loaded on board.

A telephoned bomb warning told police the device would go off in 45 minutes, but it detonated in half that time while the area surrounding Strand Road station was still being evacuated.
