Gardaí treating baby's death as murder

Gardaí are now treating as murder the death of a baby boy in North Dublin three weeks ago.

Ten-day-old Johnny Mc Carthy, from Navan in Co. Meath, died as result of head injuries on January 8.

The child's family were on a visit to a house in Lusk in North County Dublin on the night of January 7.

A house party was taking place and some time late on Friday night, the baby became unwell. He was rushed Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda and was pronounced dead in the early hours.

A post mortem later found he died from blunt force trauma to the head, while he had also sustained bruising to his body.

The death of the baby was being treated as suspicious but following additional medical evidence and the results of the post mortem, it has now been upgraded to murder.

Two people were arrested yesterday on suspicion of withholding information, bringing to eight the number questioned so far.

Gardaí are renewing their appeal for information.
