GOAL: 'Military-style' relief operation may have to be launched in Haiti
A military-style relief operation may have to be mounted by the international community to deal with the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, according to GOAL CEO, John O’Shea.
“Those who care deeply about the plight of millions affected by the earthquake should realise that the scale of the disaster presents an insurmountable problem for the aid community,” Mr. O’Shea said.
“Civilised society does not posses the capacity to deal with a tragedy of such dimensions. It’s a job for a military group.”
The aid official added that common sense demands that the United Nations Security Council invites the United States to take overall control of the relief and rehabilitation project. O’Shea believes that the aid community and other nations would welcome such a move and would rally behind the leadership given by the United States.
GOAL confirmed their intention to undertake another delivery of food and non food items in Port-au-Prince tomorrow.
“We will be taking delivery of some of the cargo brought in by Irish Aid yesterday and we intend to get it to the people without delay.”
