RBS to cut 200 IT jobs in Ireland

More than 200 jobs are being cut at Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), owners of Ulster Bank, it was confirmed today.

Some 196 workers in Dublin are being laid off with a further 25 in Belfast being made redundant.

All staff work in the bank’s back-room technical support services looking after IT and telecommunications.

RBS said employees were told in a series of meetings their roles were no longer required.

“We remain committed to our long-standing principle of situating customer contact work within the country or region where the customer is located,” the banks said.

“RBS will work closely with all impacted staff and their union representatives.

Staff, who offered technical support for all subsidiaries in the RBS Group, will be offered transfers to office hubs in parts of Britain.

RBS said the redundancies were part of planned job cuts it warned of last April.

They are separate from the planned 750 lay-offs Ulster Bank announced last January with the closure of First Active branches and warnings in August of another 250 job cuts.

RBS also said management aimed to keep the number of compulsory redundancies to a minimum.
