Sunday World gets injunction preventing journalist from working elsewhere

The Sunday World newspaper has secured a temporary High Court order preventing journalist Paul Williams from working for any other publication.

The newspaper took the action following the announcement that Mr Williams is to move to the rival publication the News of the World Newspaper.

Today at the High Court Ms Justice Mary Laffoy granted Sunday Newspapers Limited an interim injunction preventing Mr Williams from working in for any other publication other than the Sunday World.

The judge, who made the order following an ex-parte (one side only) application, made the matter returnable to Monday.

The Judge granted the injunction on the grounds that there was a fair issue to be tried and that the balance of convenience favoured the making of the order.

Seeking the injunction Mark Connaughton SC for the Sunday World told the court that it was his client's case that Mr Williams, under the provisions of the National Union of Journalist's House Agreement, which covered Mr Williams' position as crime editor, was obliged to serve a period of three months' notice.
