Man jailed for phone threat to Cork boss McCarthy

A paranoid schizophrenic who pleaded guilty to making a death threat to the then-Cork hurling manager Gerald McCarthy has been jailed for a month.

Cork District Court heard that Trevor O'Reilly, with an address at Andersons Quay, was unrepentant over the call that was made at the height of a row over who should manage the county's senior hurling team.

Mr McCarthy described the telephone threat, which was made to his home on March 5, as frightening and distressing.

Judge Con O'Leary jailed the 30-year-old accused for nine months, suspending the final eight after hearing the victim appeal for leniency.
