SVP hits out at jailing of fine defaulters

Jailing people who fail to pay court fines was today branded ludicrous and outdated by one of the country’s leading charities.

As the numbers behind bars for the offence soared by almost 90% to 2,520 last year, the Society of St Vincent de Paul demanded reform of the penal system.
