Carlow man wins appeal aginst Real IRA conviction

A Carlow man walked free from the Four Courts after the Court of Criminal Appeal quashed his conviction of membership of the IRA.

Today in setting aside Mark Doran's conviction the three-judge appeal court directed that a new trial take place.

In 2007, Doran (aged 29), Poacher's Lock, Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, was convicted of membership of an unlawful organisation, styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Óglaigh na hÉireann, on October 26, 2006.

He was jailed for four years at the Special Criminal Court in Dublin.

Mr Doran, who had pleaded not guilty, appealed his conviction.

Today the CCA of Mr Justice Fidelma Macken presiding, sitting with Mr Justice Roderick Murphy and Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne said that the court was not satisfied that it had been established that Mr Doran was guilty of the charge against him.
