Prisoner in serious condition after Mountjoy row

A prisoner is in a serious condition in hospital following an altercation with a fellow inmate at Mountjoy jail in Dublin yesterday evening.

The man was initially treated by staff at the prison for superficial injuries, but was later transferred to the Mater Hospital.

He was subsequently returned to the prison after refusing further treatment, but was brought back to hospital this morning and is now said to be in a serious condition.

The Gardaí and the Irish Prison Service are both investigating the matter.
